I would only finance if you're already having success on small scale. You better be able to plant grow harvest sell, do book keeping... financing is a risk. I think one of the best ways if a person can manage it is maintain a day job while you dip your toe into the ide of growing foods to sell. You may find there's not a market in your area for what you want to sell.. you may find you suck at farming and need to practice.. I'd probably use a day job to build up capitalto get started before jumping in feet first...

Love your book and I enjoy your videos. But I do think these numbers vary GREATLY from region to region. I live in Belgium (Europe) where the cost of labor is wildly expensive. For us, I think probably half of your revenue will be labor cost, then another 25% for operational cost at least. However, 150k/acre (Canadian dollars I presume) translates to about 250k euro per hectare. This, I think, is unheard of for any farm in western europe, whether they are organic, conventional, CSA, or otherwise... I would be very interested to converse with other farmers from Europe who have reached these numbers indeed. Cheers!

Its not the presence of the nodes that tell you if your fixing nitrogen or not. You must split open the node with your finger nail and verify that it is red inside the node. If it is red then you have the bacteria present and they are actively fixing nitrogen. If it is white then no nitrogen is currently being fixed. Nodes tend to graduate in color over their cycle of the plants life and should end up red. If not then the right association of bacteria that fix the nitrogen for that plant is not present. Just fyi. Love that your showing how to use cover crops. Thank you.

I am looking to start a Hub. I really think it is the way to go for us. I cannot be standing at the farmer’s market every Saturdays since it is my main time to work the garden. I also want to help homesteaders that really do not have the volume to start their own. It is harder to get consistency but I think it is a good way to help others get a revenue from their farm.

Correction 31 minutes in… when you guys are talking about the soil “structure” being nice when wet and not nice when it’s dry. That is not called soil structure is soil “texture”. Structure is the habitat of the soil meaning the tiny insect and worm holes and tunnels and air pockets. That will be the same regardless of soil moisture. The texture is what you are referring to when talking about consistency of the soil. T the moisture of the soil and how hard or soft it is, if it’s. Crumbly or soft or hard and gritty, or sandy. These are all examples of soil texture.

There are a lot of producers in my area, so competition at the farmers market is keen and not what I'm interested in after a long career dealing with clients in another setting. I upsell my produce with a soup and canned fermented vegetables CSA, which doesn't require that my vegetables look perfect (because I chop them up). They're also shelf or freezer stable, so if they don't sell in a particular week I have them for another week. It does require that I rent a local commercial kitchen for several hours month. This allows me to market garden and to cook, two passions. And it prolongs my season to year round. Folks eat less soup in the summer when I'm busy in the garden, but over the colder months they love the soup. I can freeze produce and use it later in soup. I'm thinking of pairing with a local baker to add bread to the CSA, since it goes so well with soup. I'd like to also add winter greens, so a soup/salad/bread CSA.

My grandfather in Mississippi had "pick your own" greens, peas, okra, melons and other things. I`m planting 20 fig and dwarf mulberry trees this year but with the goal of having enough trees for the birds and I and for cuttings to root and leave for free at a small rural church food pantry dropoff for poor people. Many can`t afford fruit trees or need encouragement to get any planted. I think it`s very important going forward to distribute food forest plants for the future because things are going downhill.

We farm American Bresse chicken. It is interesting to hear these stories. We are trying to this in Texas. We love those chickens. We cannot say they are French but really they are the same chickens. We are working on moving them to be finished with milk. But we sell them for much less and to normal people. So we have a while to go. They taste so much better than any chicken you would ever eat. They are so much fun too.

We recently bought a BCS740 with a 85cm Berta flail to work in our wood now it has reached the stage that our old Massey Ferguson 35x won't get in there any more. While we really like the 740 there is no doubt we couldn't live without the 35x. At least here in the UK it would be a lot cheaper to start with an old Fergie or similar along with some second-hand implements than to go fully down the 2-wheel route. There are simply not sufficient implements for 2-wheel tractors on the used market (and almost no used 2-wheel tractors out their either). Over here, old Fergies, David Browns, etc are reasonably abundant and spares are readily available and cheap.

Hey JM, love your work, been inspired by your story since you started lecturing and put your first book out. I'm a trained community health education presenter who has taught organic gardening, now volunteering in Vanuatu in the Tropics sharing my carpentry skills with young men,...and enjoying tropical food growing of course. What about actual soil amending and correcting deficiencies and imbalances with a soil test? Have you ever done this? Most 'organic' growers are clearly missing the foundational mineral needs and balance and focusing on questionable science, that as you say doesn't affect 90+% of what produces quality vegetables. I used to be hardcore 'organic' until I discovered the soil science done by William Albrecht (1940s), defining how to fill up the base mineral saturation in the soil and correct major and minor minerals for a healthy structure and function in the soil. He discovered this impacted animal and human health more than other approaches, that addressing the underlying mineral difeciencies and imbalances could over time give truly nutrient dense healthy produce. Niel Kinsey from Kinsey Ag wrote textbooks on this topic and lectured extensively. I find thier soil recommendations very easy and straight forward. Blessings brother Keep up the good work, thankyou for sharing your journey and passion for growing healthy local food, you have truly inspired more in this space than most and in my books you deserve a medal. Growers that focus on healthy clean veg are the champions of society.......along with mothers, lol Btw im still hardcore organic composting and Mulching creating peds in nicely aggregated soil, but now with true soil science as I understand it as a foundation.
